Lot 172 A SYRIAN CARVED AND BONE-INLAID WOODEN TABLE, 20TH CENTURY

A finely carved Syrian wooden table of architectural form, with a broad rectangular top supported by four tapering legs, the entire structure richly decorated with pierced, carved and openwork ornament. The frame is embellished with scrolling vegetal motifs, geometric borders and stylised arabesques, with numerous bone-inlaid rosettes providing a striking contrast to the dark polished wood. The table incorporates four folding side seats, each with a shaped and decorated wooden panel, together forming an ingenious multi-purpose design. The lower shelf is centred by a circular carved and inlaid medallion, while the upper structure features elaborate pierced arches and rows of turned wooden elements. 73 by 50 by 50 cm.
