Lot 101 A FINE OTTOMAN GILT-BRASS CANDLESTICK, LATE 18TH–EARLY 19TH CENTURY

A monumental gilt-brass mosque candlestick of architectural form, with a broad circular drip pan above a truncated conical base supporting a tall cylindrical candle socket. The socket is engraved with a band of elegant Arabic calligraphy above finely chased geometric diaper ornament, while the rim and base are decorated with continuous scrolling arabesque friezes. Raised and hammered from sheet brass, with chased and engraved decoration, retaining a rich golden patina with wear consistent with age and use. A fine example of Ottoman religious metalwork, produced for use in a mosque, shrine, or pious foundation (waqf).
