Lot 219 A COBALT BLUE WHEEL-CUT AND ENGRAVED GLASS BOTTLE,MESOPOTAMIA, 10TH–12TH CENTURY

An elegant cobalt-blue glass bottle of elongated piriform form, rising from a short folded foot to broad rounded shoulders and a tall waisted neck terminating in a gently flaring rim. Fashioned from richly colored translucent glass, the vessel is extensively decorated with finely wheel-cut and engraved ornament executed with exceptional precision. The shoulder is encircled by horizontal registers of geometric ornament, including braided bands, petal motifs, and zigzag friezes. The principal decorative field across the body is filled with repeating medallions enclosing stylized palmettes and scrolling foliage, linked by delicate vine tendrils and floral devices engraved against a densely cross-hatched ground. Around the upper register is an elegant Kufic inscription forming a continuous frieze, conveying a benedictory formula bestowing blessings and prosperity upon the owner, a characteristic feature of luxury Islamic glass produced for elite patrons. The engraved decoration remains remarkably crisp and legible, while the foot exhibits expected wear and a small area of ancient surface loss. Height 33 cm.
