A manuscript page from Ferdawsi’s Shahnameh, depicts a royal audience in which Bahram Gur sits enthroned upon a raised platform while a man accused of wrongdoing is brought before him. The ruler, dressed in a brightly colored robe and plumed turban and holding a sword across his lap, presides over the proceedings with calm authority. Before him a figure bends forward in submission, while two attendants behind the prisoner carry a sword, indicating the imminent enforcement of the king’s judgment. The text is arranged in four columns in nasta‘liq script, with a painting executed in opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper.
