Lot 221 MAJNUN IN THE WILDERNESS, MUGHAL, INDIA 18TH CENTURY

Reference: ART3008272

Opaque colours on paper, deptcing Majnun as an emaciated ascetic figure with a thin body and sparse clothing. His posture is slightly bent and contemplative, suggesting his madness and spiritual devotion to Layla. Two turbaned men sit nearby, apparently visiting or addressing him. In many versions of this story, these figures represent relatives, elders, or travelers who encounter Majnun during his life in the wilderness. Majnun is surrounded by several animals—such as a lion, deer, rabbit, dog or fox-like creature, and other wildlife. 20 by 13 cm.
