Calligrapher: Mehmed Sevki Efendi (1829–1887), born in Kastamonu, was raised by his uncle, Mehmed Hulûsi Efendi, in Istanbul. Trained in thuluth and naskh scripts, he refused to study under other masters, instead learning from Hafiz Osman’s works. His self-developed style became known as Şevki Mektebi. He refined the Thuluth and naskh scripts to unmatched perfection and certified several calligraphers, including Mohammad Hosni. Sevki taught at the Ministry of War and schools, including the sons of Sultan Abdulhamid II. He died of a stroke on May 7, 1887, and was buried beside his uncle in Merkezefendi Cemetery, leaving behind three daughters and a son.
