A PAINTED PORCELAIN HOOKAH FOR PERSIAN MARKET, 19TH CENTURY

The hookah is composed of a bell-shaped base with a cylindrical neck, topped by a mushroom-shaped stem and cup-form end.
Both finely painted with white oval medallions, containing detailed half-length portraits of the Qajar kings of Persia, Naser al-Din Shah (ruled 1848-1896) and Mozaffar al-Din Shah (ruled 1896-1907). The hookah is of typical form, with a bell-shaped base, a knopped cylindrical stem and a U-shaped top. The hookah is painted a strong pink colour and is encircled by white bands.
The hookah is Continental, possibly Russian, in origin and was made for the Persian market.

Cup: 15.5 cm.
