The book is about the game of chess, dealing with its legal ruling, its origins, its symbolism, the classes of the players, the poetry that was said in praise of chess, the poetry read in different stages of the game, and the methods of playing chess. Sections of playing styles include chess issues, including predicates, representations, and breakouts.
The work is a compilation of earlier manuals on chess by Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn Ubayd Allah al-Lajlag (died in the year 970), who in turn benefited from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Sawli (lived in the early tenth century).
