Lot 719 A JAPANESE WOODED FIGURE OF A DEVOTEE IN PRAYER, 16TH CENTURY

Carved as a kneeling figure with hands raised above the head and pressed together in an attitude of devotion, the sculpture is portrayed wearing voluminous monastic robes that fall in broad, angular folds and spread across the base in generous cascading drapery. The serene face is sensitively modeled with deeply set eyes, arched brows, a straight nose, and gently pursed lips, conveying a solemn, contemplative expression. The head is closely shaven with a small topknot, while the elongated sleeves frame the figure and emphasize the dramatic upward gesture of the arms. The sculpture retains extensive traces of its original polychrome, now softened by age, with dark pigments contrasting against exposed wood and areas of natural wear. Numerous historic paper restoration strips bearing Japanese inscriptions are applied throughout the surface, testifying to repeated campaigns of conservation over the centuries and imparting a distinctive visual character. The weathered surface displays an appealing patina with areas of abrasion, flaking, and age-related wear.
