An appealing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined painting depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The artwork captures aristocrats engaging in leisurely pastimes around the Rokujô estate, during the lush months from May to July, as the ponds surrounding the estate brim with blooming lilies 百合 (yuri). Shimmering gold-leaf clouds envelop the scenes, while distant mountain peaks emerge along the horizon.
This multi-coloured painting is executed on a paper background with gold leaf highlights and is framed by two silk borders: a slender grey band and a broader blue band adorned with a floral motif. The panels are encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with copper protective hardware.
