A marriage of a long naginata 薙刀 pole and a yari’saya 槍鞘 (spear sheath).

The naginata pole is finished with a sleek black lacquer surface, accentuated with delicate raden 螺鈿 (mother-of-pearl) inlays near the top. It is fitted with patinated bronze fittings and reinforced with an iron end cap at the bottom. The yari’saya is entirely coated in black lacquer and features a circular of shape. Small metal ring at the bottom.

Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).

Pole: Length 183.7 cm, Width 3.5-4 cm, Depth 2.5-3 cm.
Cover: Length 30.5 cm, Width 30.2 cm, Depth 3.4 cm.
Both are in a very good original condition with minor traces of wear consistent with age. No blade included. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.

The naginata 薙刀 is a traditional Japanese polearm, distinct from a sword, and was historically wielded by the samurai class, ashigaru (foot soldiers), and sōhei (warrior monks). It is particularly renowned as the weapon of choice for onna-musha, female warriors of noble lineage.
