Lot 181 TWO-PANEL BYOBU SCREEN OF BIJINGA IN HEIAN STYLE (EARLY 20TH CENTURY)

Reference: ART2002204

A refined Japanese two-panel folding screen (byōbu) featuring a graceful scene of a noble lady and child, rendered in the classical Bijinga (美人画) style. The composition is inspired by the aesthetics of the Heian period (794–1185), characterized by the noblewoman’s extremely long, flowing black hair and intricately layered court robes (junihitoe).

Set against a soft, golden-hued landscape with gently undulating hills and pine trees, the figures exude elegance and serenity. The work reflects the cultural nostalgia of the Taisho era (1912–1926), likely dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period. The detailed textile patterns and delicate facial features highlight exceptional craftsmanship, while the screen’s silk border and signature in the lower right corner suggest an accomplished hand.

Width 189 cm.
Height 172 cm.
