MEIJI PERIOD,1868-1912 This commanding Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono) depicts the iconic figure of Saitô Musashibô Benkei (1155–1189), the fearless sôhei (warrior monk) whose strength, loyalty, and legendary exploits are central to Japanese folklore. Rendered in the dynamic Meiji period style, Benkei is shown in full armor, gripping his weapon with fierce intensity—his eyes focused and determined, echoing the moment before his famed final duel at Gojô Bridge in Kyoto.

Known for his mission to collect 1,000 swords from unworthy samurai, this artwork captures Benkei just before achieving his 1,000th victory. His meticulously detailed armor, expressive stance, and bold color palette stand out against the aged golden silk background, emphasizing both his heroic presence and spiritual gravity.

The scroll is housed in its original marked wooden storage box.
