A captivating rectangular lacquer suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box) with a slightly arched, well-fitted overhanging cover and rounded corners.
The lid is adorned with a majestic fiery orange phoenix 鳳凰 (hô’ô), standing tall with wings unfurled, positioned at the heart of a large flower surrounded by scrolling leaves and vines. The scrolling plant design continues onto the sides of the box.
This exquisite artwork is rendered in polychrome and silver takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) on a textured black lacquer substrate reminiscent of leather.
The interior features a scrolling cloud design done in golden and silver togidashi makie 研出蒔絵 (burnished lacquer design) and hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer ground 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi).
The box is fitted with three removable trays, one of which houses a lacquered inkstone 硯 (suzuri). The edges are lined with silver, and the underside is decorated with sparse golden nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer).
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).

Considering its age it is in a very good original condition with minimal signs of wear conform age and use. Irregularity corner of inside cover (see photo). Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
Complete with red wooden tomobako 供箱 (tomobako).
