A TALL JAPANESE SIX-PANEL BYÔBU WITH PINE TREE FOREST, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY

Remarkable, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined Kanô School-style painting featuring a dense pine tree forest 松 (matsu) against a backdrop of shiny gold leaf. Filled with large ancient curving trees, their trunks covered by moss. Creating a sea of canopies with some branches sticking out.

In Japanese culture, the evergreen pine tree is known to represent longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. It is commonly linked with virtue and long life, even immortality.

The panels are mounted by two brocade silk borders, a thin navy blue one, and a light brown one. Protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware with an engraved design resembling the ‘Three Friends of Winter’歳寒三友 (Saikan Sanyû), the protective knobs along the sided shaped like flower blossoms.

Period: Japan – Late Edo (First half 19th century).

Considering its age (approx. 155-220 years old!) it is in a very good condition with traces of wear consistent with age and a old restorations. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
