A THAI BRONZE GILDED SEATED BUDDHA, 20TH CENTURY

A bronze gilded seated Buddha in the old Rattanakosin style from Thailand. The hands in Bhumisparsha gesture, the earth touching mudra. This is one of the most well known mudras. You will often see Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, in a seated posture with this mudra. The right hand is poised with the fingertips downward and “touching the earth,” with the palm facing inward. The left hand is in the meditation (dhyana) mudra.
When the Buddha became enlightened, he touched the earth with this mudra during his meditation. The earth was touched and witnessed the awakening. It still has the original Thai export tag that we have translated as: “number Fine Arts Department allowed to issue outside the kingdom according to the leaves Licensed at 19/2512”. Including a lacquered stand.
