A JAPANESE SUIT OF ARMOUR (YOROI), FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY (LATE EDO PERIOD)

A complete black lacquered Japanese suit of armour (yoroi) laced with navy blue, and multi-coloured and orange hems, and a two-piece cuirass with rare black bristly bear fur trims (kuro’urushinuri kon’ito iroiro’suso nimai’dô tôsei gusoku).
A marriage of pieces with high-quality re-furbishing, brocade and lacing, to form a harmonious and unified set.

– 60 (!)-plate ‘russet iron’ suji’bachi kabuto (helmet with raised ridges) mounted by a maedate (decorative front piece) with a crest (mon) depicting three flowers, nestled on a horn-shaped piece. 5-tiered chrysanthemum-shaped copper tehen’no’kanamono (decorative apex fitting), 5-tiered black lacquered ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate shikoro (neck guards), a red silk agemaki (decorative tassel) and small black lacquered fukikaeshi (face guards). The mabizashi (visor) finished with a copper rim.
– Black lacquer ‘angry man’-facial mask (resseibô) with separate nose-piece with a black bushy moustache and a short goatee, pair of orekugi (helmet cord tying hooks), and 4-tiered ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate gorget (yodarekake).
– Sode (shoulder guards), tôsei-type, constructed with 6 rows of slightly arched ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plates.
– Kote (bracer), hisago-type 瓠 (bottle gourd), constructed with various black/dark brown lacquered pieces connected by Japanese mail (kaushi-gusari), some of these pieces are in the shape of bottle gourds, hence the name. This whole is placed over orange brocade silk with a scrolling motif. – Dô (cuirass), nuinobe-type, constructed with rows of black lacquered ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate. The back of the cuirass has a hook (gattari) and support for a flag-pole (ukezutsu).
Hanging from the cuirass 6-parts of 4 (!)-piece ‘kiritsuke iyzane’-plate kusazuri (tassets) ending in bristly trims of black bear fur.
– Haidate (thigh armour), ‘kawara’-type, of 5-rows of 27-30 black lacquered rectangular plates, placed matching silk and green decorative ‘smoked leather’ borders.
– Suneate (shin guards), shino-type, long metal plates connected by Japanese mail with a dark blue tateage (knee guards) and en-suite fabric.

Including a square reddish brown lacquered store-box for a suit-of armour (yoroi’bako) with iron ‘pole carrying’-handles.
Approx. height with box: 160 cm.
Considering its age in a very good restored condition with general traces of wear conform age, like lacquer loss. Fukikaeshi helmet restored.
