A JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE CYLINDRICAL ARITA VASE, LATE 17TH CENTURY

The sides of the vase are painted with four rectangular panels, two with a vase of formally arranged peony, the others with a more loosely conceived spray of chrysanthemum; the panels separated by stylised floral motifs. The flattened shoulders are decorated with a collar of chrysanthemum petals below a short neck which has a band of stiff leaves.
