Beautiful large two-panel room divider 屏風 (byôbu) with a dynamic painting of an impressive cherry blossom tree 桜 (sakura) hanging over a classical Chinese poem talking about nature. The poem is dated dated: Taishô 6 (1917). The painting is done in black ink 墨 (sumi) set on a nicely oxidized silver-leaf background.
Signed and with a corresponding seal: Butsugai. This signature and seal belong to the painter Wakasa Seikyô (Butsugai)(1887-1957). He is a painter who works in the Nanga style and originates from Akita, but mainly active in Kyôto. He visited China and was heavily influenced by his Chinese contemporaries Wang Yiting and Wu Changshuo.
This room divider is light in weight and can easily be mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art.
