The cover is carved with a roundel enclosing three peonies amongst rocks surrounded by a leafy ruyi-head band. The edges of the box cover and base are carved with a leafy qilin band. The interior and base are lacquered black, and the base has an apocryphal Qianlong mark in gilt.
