A JAPANESE LACQUER TRAY, MEIJI PERIOD,19TH CENTURY

A finely decorated Japanese lacquer tray, of rectangular form with rounded corners and raised sides, decorated in maki-e with a dynamic scene of figures in traditional dress, rendered in gilt, red and blue lacquer against a black ground. The composition incorporates stylised floral motifs, hanging ornaments and geometric details, with extensive gold-sprinkled decoration (nashiji) throughout. 34 by 26 cm.
