AN APPLIED GLASS FOOTED CUP, PERSIA, 9TH CENTURY

On a high trailed glass zigzag foot, with straight sides and everted lip, the handle with protruding rounded thumb rest.
Height: 9.2 cm.
Diameter: 10 cm.

The technique of applied glass was carried over from Roman times into the Islamic period. The glass was manipulated using various tools to create ornamental patterns using glass discs or trails. A wholly Persian innovation was the transformation of functional elements, for example the foot of this vessel, into essential aspects of the decoration.
