A GILT AND SILVER METAL-THREAD EMBROIDERED PANEL OF AL-SHAMI DOOR, DATED 1321 AH/1903 AD

Of rectangular form, embroidered in silver and gilt threads over a green silk ground, the surface broken into cartouches of various shapes and sizes containing inscriptions in thuluth, the interstices filled with vegetal designs and floral scrolls, a large gilt inscription of three lines (1) halfway up on a green silk ground of Quran 59 surah Al-Hashr v.22-v.24. Flanked on both sides with six small roundels (2) enclosing the name of four Caliphs, Hassan and Hussein on red and black ground. Above the central panel two roundels (3) enclosing Kalimaat Al-tawhid surrounded by flower scrolls interspersed with floral motifs and knotted ribbons. The lower section (4) with the tughra of the Sultan Abdulhamid II and dated 1321 AH/1903 AD in gilt and silver threads.
The upper section with a roundel (5) enclosing ‘hadihi al-sitara al-sharifah li-bab al-Shami’ on a red ground, This panel was made for the Shami door, and Quran 26 Al-Shu‘ara, the Poets vv.193-195 on a red ground. A central panel (6) with Quran 3 surah Al-Imraan v.132 on a black ground.
