Cast brass, mater engraved with the name of maker, containing five plates, openwork rete, alidade to reverse, with pin and horse, suspension loop. 7.7 cm diam.

CATALOGUE NOTE ‘The work of the weakest of God’s servants Muhammad Muqim ibn ‘Isa ibn al-Haddad, the Royal astrolabe maker of Lahore’. The year 1051 AH/1641-42 AD. Another work by this renowned astrolabist is in the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, inv. no. 43704. There is also what is described as a ‘brass globe astrolabe’ by his son Diya’ al-Din Muhammad in the Shrine Museum in Mashhad dated 1058 AH/1648 AD.
