Lot 55 - A Chinese Longquan celadon glazed grotto

龍泉青釉觀音佛龕


The Guanyin is modelled seated with hair in a high cowl, long robes, on a base supported with lotus and waves. The grotto is decorated with applied scrolling foliate decoration. She is accompanied by her two attendants standing on lotus flowers. The grotto is covered overall in a olive glaze with the faces and hands left in biscuit.
Provenance: from a private Dutch collection.

Compare to a smaller piece (24.3 cm. high) with the grotto also decorated with a lotus in the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, accession no. OM-1992-0055 and further grottoes, including one from the collection of Evelyn Annenberg Hall sold at Christie's New York, 29 March 2006, lot 90; one sold at Christie's New York, 19-20 September 2013, lot 1285; and.
